Sophistication and humour to celebrate International Cat Day
Cats are the most popular companion animal in New Zealand, with 44% of households sharing their homes with at least one cat (according to the New Zealand Companion Animal Council). Epsom residents showed how much they love their feline friends with a special Happy Hour on Thursday the 12th of August.
The residents showed their talent and creativity dressing up as their favourite cat or turning up with a stuffed cat under their arm. Of course, the party wouldn’t be complete without the special appearance of a real-life cat!
The village gave prizes to the best dressed cats: John and Jan, Louise, Dorothy “the Sophisticat”, and Gail who turned up as a very impressive Catwoman. Their talent and sense of humour got rewarded with some chocolates and a bottle of bubbles.
Celebrated on August 8 every year, International Cat Day was started by the International Fund for Animal Welfare in 2002. The animal rights organisation uses the day to promote the needs and wants of cats and encourages cat owners to find new ways to improve their bond with their pets.
