Celebrating Our Volunteers
Every year at the end of June, New Zealand celebrates National Volunteer Week to honour the collective energies and mana of all volunteers in the country. Epsom Village always participates in this initiative with its own Thank You Volunteers Morning Tea, celebrating the unwavering dedication of their village volunteers.
This year, almost 40 residents were acknowledged during the event, which is one of the most important in the village’s social calendar. They all fulfill very important tasks at the village such as organizing the library, acting as fire wardens, participating in the Residents Committee, or leading special interest groups such as the Quirky Quiz or Pizza nights.
At the event, Village Manager Lillian Fletcher starts by recognizing each volunteer and their role, giving residents the opportunity to show gratitude for their contributions to village life. Volunteers are then presented with a special gift, this year being a beautifully decorated cupcake with a personal message.
Following the speech, residents enjoyed a luxurious morning tea accompanied by entertainment from pianist Anria Breytenbach. The morning tea featured homemade scones, a favorite treat prepared by the village's coordinator Penny Hostetler for special events.
Volunteering is not only a good way to put our talents and skills to good use, but also a meaningful way to make a positive impact on our community and connect with others who share similar values and passions. At Epsom Village, some of our residents still work part-time, while others volunteer both within and outside the village. As the famous quote from Sherry Anderson goes, "Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless." We wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment at Real Living.
