Winter Baking Extravaganza

With winter giving us the perfect excuse to stay cosy at home, baking becomes a delightful way to pass the time and spread joy. At Epsom Village, we embrace this seasonal pleasure with our annual Bake Off competition, celebrating the season’s warmth and creativity. For the second year in a row, the village’s best bakers gathered for this mouthwatering event, showcasing their finest slices, biscuits, and cakes.

Grandmothers are renowned for their exceptional baking skills, and our village is fortunate to have many such talented kitchen maestros. The village lounge quickly filled with the irresistible aroma of fresh baking, featuring delightful scents of coffee cake, cranberry crunch biscuits, vanilla plum cake, cinnamon swirl slices, and apple cake.

The competition spanned two days: Day One was dedicated to the best slices and biscuits, while Day Two focused on cakes. Tasting duties fell to three judges: Les, our maintenance officer; Laki, our in-house builder; and Christine, a Resident Committee member. Their keen sense of humour and enjoyment made them excellent judges for the delicious entries.

In addition to our official judges, Epsom Village encouraged resident participation by allowing everyone to vote for their favourite creations. It’s safe to say the competition attracts more tasters than bakers, but who can blame them with such tempting treats?

The winners of Week One were Sally with her Cranberry and Pistachio Slice and Gurli with her Jaffa Cookies. The winners of Week Two were again Gurli with her apple cake and Mel with her plum cake.

The Bake Off competition at Epsom Village truly brings our community together, filling the air with joy and camaraderie. From the laughter shared over taste tests to the pride of seeing one’s creations celebrated, the event is a highlight of our winter season.

Stitches of kindness

Take a moment to admire the wonderful peggy squares that our residents at Remuera Gardens have been knitting to support local charities around Auckland. The Pins and Needles group meets every Monday afternoon, and they’ve been hard at work crafting these beautiful squares, which will later be crocheted together into cosy blankets. At Real Living, we understand that contributing to a good cause enriches both the receivers and the givers, fostering a strong sense of connection and well-being for everyone involved.
